Until we can start to put 3-4 past some of these mid/lower-table teams and win the game, its' going to be hard to get back to the CL or win the Premiership. Even more so, in a weekend when Chelsea and Man U. drop points.

Well, it was a 1-1 draw today against Man U. I feel like it was a missed opportunity to pick up three points. I though we played poorly in the first half when we were given the chance to play without Nani, Rooney and Hernandez on the pitch. Anyone else, thoughts on the game?

Here we go, Man U vs LFC at Anfield. An always circled fixture from day one of the season. So any thoughts on the big match or the season so far.

I am ok with the way the season has started, with the exception of the embarrassing loss to the Spurs. It was going to take some time to come together with all the new signings. At this point sitting in 5th place and six points back, a big win against Man U. could put some wind in our sails before we play two mid-table teams (Norwich City,Swansea City) and a bottom table team (West Bromwich Albion) before Chelsea & Man City at the end of Nov. I am more nervous of Norwich, Swansea City, and West Brom than Man U and Chelsea, because it seems we lose the most points to mid table teams than we do against the big clubs.

Well, it's an early match on Sat, so go to bed early on Friday night.

Wow...the beautiful Liverpool game is back. I returned from vacation at 12:30 AM early Monday morning and started watching the game despite having an 8:30 AM meeting in the morning...hey...I have my priorities! I loved every moment...except the last minute...but 91 minutes of phenomenal soccer left me on cloud nine!

Two things really stood out for me...

First, the combination of Kuyt and Suarez was magical with great support from Lucas, Downing, and Adam. I'm excluding Henderson even though he scored as I still haven't seen anything special from him save an occasional cross or two. I do think he has promise...but at this point I think we paid a lot for that promise...and it has yet to show itself. What I loved most about our attack was the incredible creativity and unpredictability. Suarez was unlucky not to score and it looked like he earned a penalty when Zat Knight grabbed his foot after he got passed him. El Pistolero must be the most feared striker in the EPL at this point...what an animal!

The second thing that stood out for me was the total team defense...swarming...suffocating...all-for-one, one-for-all dogged defending from end line to end line. I've often said that when we do that for 90 minutes...there are few teams on the planet that can stick with us. Combine that with an attack that comes from all angles with speed, guile, and purpose and you have a Liverpool that will go places. If we keep that up whether we're playing a big four team or a bottom dweller and we have a real shot at a top three finish...if not a run at the title.

Very sad to see Meireles leave as I really love the way he plays. Glad to see Eggnog, Poulsen, and hopefully Cole move on. I realize we have to balance the books a bit after a heavy 9 months of spending, but I will miss Raul and what he brought to the club. And Mr. Bellamy is back to fill the Ngog spot as the Carling/FA Cup striker slot...great speed wrapped up in a colorful character. A little more competition in central defense with Suarez' mate coming in. A good young defender, and hopefully one that will be around for some time.

Lastly...how about Skrtel as our fill-in right back?! I thought he was brilliant...and not because he scored, because he would have done that if he were playing central defense. I was glad to see Kelly start, and his injury looks like it's minor, so we should see him back soon. When Captain Fantastic returns...Kenny will have some decisions to make...a nice problem to have compared to the last several years when we had essentially only one line-up, and it fell off pretty dramatically after that.

Arsenal vs. Liverpool Preview

I watched Arsenal’s CL game this week and saw that they are pretty loose in the back, but seem to have a little more speed on the field with the younger guys filling in for all the injured players. They also have a few suspensions for the next three games too, so I believe they are ripe for the picking.

So…is it Skrtel and Carra, or does Agger get picked over Carra? Hmmmm. I think it will be Agger on the bench as apparently he had a dead leg against Sunderland and I think Kenny trusts Carra more than Agger. Agger may come in for Skrtel at the 60th minute since he can’t possibly be match fit after missing all of the pre-season.

He’s got to start Kuyt after Henderson’s vanilla performance last week…bring the young lad on later in the game if you have to…but Kuyt rarely runs out of gas, and brings far more to the team at this point anyway. Johnson is still out, so if it’s me…I’m going with Kelly at right back…bigger, stronger, and more experience than Flanagan for my money. I didn’t have any other issues with the rest of the line-up, but I have to wonder whether Meireles could have provided a little more spark in the 2nd half when we got a little flat…Aquilani wasn’t even on the bench, so he’s got to be close to heading out the door, but right now I think we could use one of them.

Ngog to Bolton then… along with a little cash and Poulsen to Stoke for Shawcross to shore up the central defense…speaking of which…you don’t hear Danny Wilson’s name much anymore do you?

Well, the start of the season is about two weeks away. What are peoples hopes, dreams and wishes for the year? I think we all want a League Title, so hopefully King Kenny will bring us to the promised land! The club has brought in a lot of new faces this summer, how do we feel about the new guys? To me it seems like we have a lot of midfielders, who plays and who's on the bench? Its' been along summer with out Premier League soccer, so let's get the chatter going!

Season End Get Together

Well, it's been a few days since the Season's End Get Together. Hopefully people have had a few days to recover and are now waiting for the season to kick off again. It was great to have supporters come together to talk about the past year and our hopes for next year. Hopefully people had the chance to chat with other supporters about important issues, like who we should sign next, our favorite player, the chance to travel to Liverpool and take in a match or two, or maybe even about that third kit. And maybe a few pictures will show up here as well.

Thanks goes out to Marlon, Emily, Jamison, and any one else I may have missed, for making the party come together and all the hard work throughout the season, to make the club a success.

Thanks goes to Brit's Pub for letting us use the Clubhouse, the donations to the raffle, and everything else they have done to make the club feel welcome, be sure to thank them, by buying a few pints from time to time.

Hopefully the next season will be filled with more ups than downs and hopefully another positive chapter in Liverpool's history.

What a crazy 72 hours....

Enough about Torres, as he is officially the same to me as Owen. Not worth further discussion. As King Kenny said "Movement is part and parcel of football. I wouldn't be here if there were no transfers. I started off at Celtic. There are many people who've started off at clubs and moved on. And certainly if Kevin (Keegan) hadn't gone I wouldn't have come here". Time to move past it and look to the future and the future at least on paper looks bright.

The owners have certainly show their intent with spending almost 60 million pounds in a matter of days. Suarez may of been brought to play off Torres, but
you can see why they went for Carroll. A true No. 9, Carroll has the strength and power to match it with the very best defenders in the Premier League. His outstanding heading ability, coupled with a strong work ethic, make him a handful for any opposition.

Suarez would be the perfect foil. Technically excellent and with an unerring

finish, he is a threat from long range, in the box or in the air. He is also versatile and likes to attack from wide positions, making him an elusive presence. Bring on the goals!!!

True both players have a history of getting into trouble, but if anyone can put them straight its Kenny, Stevie and Carra. Welcome to the club Andy & Luis. Can not wait to see you guys in action!!!.

Liverpool FC confirmed today that manager Roy Hodgson has left the club by mutual consent.

Principal Owner John Henry commented: "We are grateful for Roy's efforts over the past six months, but both parties thought it in the best interests of the club that he stand down from his position as team manager. We wish him all the best for the future."

My first premiership game, I watched was Liverpool vs. Newcastle in in March of 1997, a game in with Liverpool won 4-3. Goals in the 87' & 88' by Newcastle to draw even & Fowler scoring the winner in the dying seconds of injury time. The one of the best games I have seen, along with the "Miracle of Istanbul"

Liverpool owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks have lifted the temporary injunction stopping the sale of the club by the Royal Bank of Scotland.

This development should thereotically pave the way for New England Sports Ventures to complete their £300 million deal before RBS' afternoon deadline to repay a £240m debt. It is understood that Hicks has electronically filed a 'motion to dissolve' the injunction.

However, reports have emerged that the action could see Hicks and Gillett push through a deal with RBS which would see hedge fund Mill Financial take control.

Liverpool owners lose case in High Court

Tom Hicks and George Gillett have failed in their High Court attempt to wrest back control of Liverpool.

The unpopular American co-owners had tried to oust the boardroom rivals that had sanctioned the sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures (NESV).

But Mr Justice Floyd ruled they did not have the power to do so.

The decision means the sale to NESV can proceed, although club chairman Martin Broughton hinted rival bids may now be considered at a meeting on Wednesday.

"I am absolutely elated, it's a very important day for our club," said Broughton as he left the Royal Courts of Justice in London.

"This will clear the way for the sale, we will have a board meeting this evening and proceed with the sale.

Liverpool's hearing to decide if NESV can finally take over the club, will take place at 10:30 am on Tuesday, at the High Court.

Current incumbents George Gillett and Tom Hicks are contesting the legality of the sale because they say they sacked board members Christian Purslow and Ian Ayre before they and chairman Martin Broughton agreed to the sale of the club to NESV (New England Sports Ventures).

Broughton, Purslow and Ayre agreed to the sale despite owners Gillett and Hicks voting against it, and the Premier League approved the new owners.

The sale will go through pending the court decision. If Liverpool FC lose, Gillett and Hicks will have to find a new buyer in three days before the Royal Bank of Scotland take control of the club.

The American owners are unhappy with the sale to NESV because they will leave the club without return to their £140 million investment.

NESV's takeover will completely wipe out the debts owed to RBS by Gillett and Hicks, including the interest payments owed on the debts.

The case will take place in Court 18 in front of Mr Justice Floyd. Liverpool fans were expected to go travel to London to protest agaist the American owners.

NESV currently own several companies, including the Boston Red Sox baseball team, New England Sports Network, Fenway Sports Group and Rousch Fenway Racing. The principal owner of the group is venture capitalist John W. Henry, with chairman Thomas C. Werner.

Speaking to the club's official website, Broughton revealed negotiations between the parties had been going on for several weeks and that the bid would see the "removing [of] the burden of acquisition debt"."

But there will be legal battles and a boardroom war as Hicks and Gillett are oposed to the offer, as it is less than they believe the club to be worth.

"Earlier Hicks and Gillett tried to sack managing director Christian Purslow and commercial director Ian Ayre in a last-ditch bid to keep control of the club.

In an attempt to block any sale and regain control of the crisis-hit club, Liverpool's much-criticised owners tried to replace Purslow and Ayre with Hicks's son, Mack Hicks, and Lori Kay McCutcheon, a vice president at Hicks Holdings.

Hicks and Gillett are understood to have argued that the club's English directors were not acting in the best interests of Liverpool and that the NESV bid - as well another undisclosed offer from Asia - "dramatically undervalued the club".

Purslow, Ayre and chairman Martin Broughton are now consulting lawyers over whether they can resist the owners' attempts to replace them and force through a sale.

"I am only disappointed that the owners have tried everything to prevent the deal from happening and that we need to go through legal proceedings in order to complete the sale," said Broughton, who has met with representative from NESV over the past few weeks."

Still feeling glum about getting knocked out of the League Cup by Northampton. I am still gutted. I am peeved at Roy for issuing a apology when look at the team he selected. It should have been able to beat Northampton but if this is our best chance for silverware, why not select the first team. And is this how far we have sunk? Is this the bottom or have we not stopped falling yet.?And the sixth of October is nearly here, I think that is when the bank calls in the debt and new owner is sight.

I need a breather from this mess right now.

Liverpool Reject Hick's Power Play

Liverpool have rejected a proposed refinancing strategy from co-owner Tom Hicks that could have given the American increased control at Anfield. Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton turned down Tom Hick's proposal.
Hicks personally delivered his proposal direct to the Liverpool board in a showdown meeting ahead of the club's Europa League tie, and was told that his plans were not acceptable. In fact, Hicks was left in no doubt of the board's resolve to find new owners and end his turbulent reign - alongside fellow American George Gillett - at the Premier League giants.
Hicks wants to buy out the £237 million Royal Bank of Scotland debt which is threatening to end his joint ownership of the club when the facility expires on deadline of October 6. He is hoping to raise funds from US banks to raise the funds to buy out RBS, possibly using the players and stadium as collateral.
With Gillett's finances in a parlous state, and with the possibility that he might default on other loans and ultimately lose his 50% stake in Liverpool, his partner Hicks is attempting to refinance alone and gain total control.
The Liverpool board are having none of that, believing an extension of the Hicks and Gillett ownership, even if it reverts to Hicks, would only prolong the financial misery.

Busy afternoon!! Liverpool have moved to sign Porto midfielder Raul Meireles in a £10.7 million deal to replace Javier Mascherano, according to reports.
The Guardian claims the deal should be finalised over the weekend, subject to a medical, which would bring the 27-year-old to Anfield with Mascherano heading to Barcelona.

Meireles has not been mentioned much in the transfer window, but I am happy with this arrival. He can play as an all-around central or defensive midfielder and is well known for his team work, passing and shooting skills. He won't be as good a passer as Alonso or be able to break up play like Mashcer but he can do both, which is something we need. Just wondering, why aren't we putting our foot down on this Torres saga like how Arsenal is with Cesc? Why is the club "waiting to hear from Torres" instead of saying "he just signed a big contract with us, he is our player, and we don't want to sell him. End of.". I admire the stance Wenger has taken with regards to the Fabregas situation. Yes, we all know Fab is tempted by Barcelona but Wenger's position tells Fab that he is wanted in Arsenal and that if Barca wants him, they'll have to pay a lot of money. The way LFC is handling it tell me "Well, if he wants to stay, that'll be great but if not, I guess that's okay too".

And all this "not playing in the CL this year" talk is also aggravating. Juventus dropped down to Seria B for one whole year and most of their players stayed on with the team. First off, f*ck the Mancs.

Secondly, I'd like to say a few things while all of us are processing what has happened to our club and Rafa.

It's not secret that I'm a Rafa backer but I can also admit, that man can be infuriating at times. Richard Jolly wrote a pretty good article in Soccernet a few days ago on Rafa's legacy and particularly how confusing/difficult it can be to decide if he was a great manager.

However, as we all discuss Rafa's legacy, I'd like to put some FACTS into the discussions. Yes, he made crazy substitutions; yes, he stuck to zonal marking (fine by me, actually) and yes, some of his purchases were questionable (whose isn't?) but let's take a look at his win record. A win record is a simple and non-subjective way to see how a manager did.

After his tenure, Rafa's win ratio is 56%. His comes third after Daglish (61%) and Paisley (57&%). So yes, he is above Houllier, Shankly, Fagan and Roy Evans (who only has 50%, which is surprising considering how some people now look at him as our last great manager). And f*cking Souness only had 41%, so he REALLY should shut the f*ck up.

3rd in the list I think makes Rafa a pretty good LFC manager. Even more telling is that he achieved this record NOT being the dominant team in the league. Daglish & Paisley had the benefit of having probably the best team in the land AND did not have to go against super-rich teams (Chelsea, Manure, etc.) that could pay ridiculous money for players and wages.

So, let's all have a banter about this but let's not talk about Rafa like he was the worst thing to have happened to this club (in my mind, it's Hicks and Gillet). At the very least, Rafa should be given some respect for this record.

In the next few days, I will be posting my favorite Rafa moments. By doing this, I hope people can see why I love this guy so much and that I think he is one of the greatest managers for LFC.

Sky Sports, BBC, basically everywhere in the world is saying Rafa has been offered a £3m severance deal to leave immediately, BBC Sport understands. If its true, how do you feel? Good? Upset? Relieved? Worried? I think the cost (if its true) is so low because he will be off to another club this season. You have to wonder if there was a clause in his contract that if he got that massive pay-out he couldn't manage for a year or so (similar to Jose's).

Here's some food for thought:

A lot of people complain about Rafa not buying an able replacement from Alonso when he left and I can agree with that, but only to a certain extent. First of all, there are not that many players of Alonso's skill and quality out there. Look at the top teams in Europe, and you'll not find many teams that have a defensive midfielder what has the same distributive skills as Alonso (maybe Carrick and dare I say, Barry).

Second of all, Rafa is not the only guy who messed up in securing a replacement. IMHO, Fergie's refusal in purchasing another top striker to replace Ronaldo is the reason why they did not win the PL and the CL. In crucial games (vs. Chelsea in the PL and vs. Bayern in the CL), Rooney was out/subpar due to injury. Who is to say that spending some of that Ronaldo money on another top striker could've won them those games, making them the most successful club in England? Yeah, we could argue that he has Berbatov and Owen already, but essentially, he sat on 80 million pounds because he didn't want to overspend on a player.

So, which is better, not overspending on a player or having a top back-up striker?

Which takes me to my final point: Does Fergie get the same crap does Rafa get? No, and yes, he has won enough titles to justify some respect but c'mon, he sat on 80 million pounds!!! He could've won the PL 4 times in a row, won the CL again but he didn't.

It's been a while since I last wrote but for now, this is what's on mind. More to follow...

Pulling Torres when we are 1-1 and putting on N'Gog is classic Rafa. Torres winning the match is to easy, far more glory in having a player that has played in months score the winner. I am a N'Gog fan, he has his place on the bench. He can come in when we have the match in hand and score a goal or 2. He is not the player to come in and win the match. We have a match winner and he was pulled for no reason. Those chances N'Gog had were laughable. Torres would of honestly put 3 of those away. Rafa Benitez has signed 78 players spending over 250 million pounds and we are right where we were in 04. Wake me up when this nightmare is over.

Another big match today, it seems like all the games are big games these days. A great result in the Derby on Saturday with a 10 man stand against Everton. Well, today we play Arsenal at the Emirates. A win today will keep us in fourth and we need to keep winning, as a few teams behind us have games in hand. Plus a Liverpool win would put a big dent in the title hopes of Arsenal, flowing defeats to Man U, and Chelsea. Leaving me to hope to a stomach a Chelsea title this year over another by Man U. Picking your poison I guess, neither are great but one is slightly better than the other. Disappointing outcome at Britannia Stadium this weekend, we had the lead with 10 minutes left and with the way the season has been going. I had that sick feeling in my gut, that I knew it would end up a 1-1. But none of the teams we are chasing won, draws for Spurs and Villa, and a loss for Man City. Filled with the excitment of returning to Anfield, I slipped my way through Liverpool's frozen streets. This was my first visit to Anfield since 2006 and by coincidence it was to see Liverpool play Reading in the League Cup; however, that was a much happier occasion, with Liverpool winning 4-3 in a rather exciting match in which I was soaked through while sitting next next to dougouts. This time I was stationed, with my good friend Peter, on the left hand side of the Kop, three rows from the back. Throughout the game the crowd tried to be positive and encouraging. Clapping when a good tackle was made or somebody took the initative to make a good pass or a driving run, but there was general discontent as the play continually faltered. The stadium was less full than usual, perhaps because of the weather and because it was on terrestrial television. There was singing at times, but there was a lack of atmosphere and volume. It felt different to the times I had been before, and maybe that is unsurprising, but the uneasiness surrounding the club was palpable. At the end there was a mixture of clapping and booing. I understand the frustration, but it is unfair to many at the club. Some of the players, notably Jamie Carragher, give all they have and have played in some of the greatest games we have ever watched. Additionally, the club is not just about the players and manager, and is not about this time only, it has grown through the hard work of many.

Since Wednesday night’s defeat, I have to admit that a number of times, I’ve asked myself, why should I care & love Liverpool F.C as much as I do when it is patently obvious that a number of players on that pitch, don’t have 5% of the passion that I feel for the Club. We are all suffering at the moment ( No less than my Mrs. who is fed up of me moping around all day & then waking up at 4.45am trying to dissect in my mind where it is all going wrong !)…..but would I change it,..NO WAY…
As a Scouser in the U.S, I believe, I feel the pain as much as anyone from back home, but I also feel the pride of being part of something which is bigger than RAFA, STEVIE G, & FERNANDO TORRES et al, we are part of the LIVERPOOL family, & yes we are all suffering, but as in our song , at the end of the storm there is & will be a Golden Sky, so whether we win, lose, or draw tomorrow at Stoke, those 11 Players on the pitch are my team & always

Hey all,So I have a PHENOMENAL story to tell.
As I said on the holiday post, my wife and I went to London for a week just after new years. Being the loyal Red that I am, I told her that we had to make a day trip up to Liverpool so that I could see the center of the footballing universe. I posted on lfcmpls.blogspot.com asking for advice on cheap ways to get there, and in no time had our train tickets and stadium tour booked!
The day we picked to go up to Liverpool was Wednesday the 6th of January. Well, on Tuesday tons of snow got dropped onto Liverpool and a lot of the rest of England. While us hardened Minnesotans didn't seem to mind it too much, needless to say most of the country did not share our sentiments (as is evidenced by more match postponements for this weekends fixtures). The BBC reported that Liverpool's airport was closed for a long stretch of the day on Tuesday, and that trains and buses had stopped running. Needless to say, I was a bit worried about our day trip. We went to sleep with thoughts of the Kop in our heads, and hoped for the best in the morning.
We got up early, headed across London to Euston Station and boarded an express train to Liverpool. To my much appreciated surprise, we departed exactly on time! No delays or anything! The tracks seemed to be in fine condition, and we seemed to be moving at a good speed. The train manager informed us after an hour that we were running about 20 minutes slow, but given the weather I thought that was fine.
We arrived at Liverpool Lime Street Station about 11:30, 15 minutes late. I had booked us for the 12:00 tour at Anfield, so we hopped in the nearest cab, said "take us to Anfield!" and we flew off at the incredible speed of no more than 5 miles per hour. Apparently our driver isn't as comfortable driving on icy roads as I am! Of course, his tires were also not designed for driving on the ice, so I can't really blame him.
Anyways, we arrived at the Kop end with about 5 minutes to spare. The ticket said to arrive 15 minutes ahead of schedule, but I figured they would make an allowance due to the weather. We strode up to the museum and tour desk, I handed the lad their my ticket, he punched away at his computer for a couple seconds, and then turned and called for someone from the room behind him. I assumed that he was grabbing someone to take us where we needed to go. He wasn't.
"So here's the thing... we can't do the tour. The stadium is just too icy that it is too dangerous to take you out onto the pitch and the stands and the like. We've been contacting everyone who booked a tour today, so honestly we're a bit surprised you showed up, but we refunded the cost of the tour to you and everything."
Heartbreak! 2 1/2 hours on a train staring at snow covered hills only to have to settle with a glimpse at the outside of my sporting cathedral! We made some small talk, I told them where we had come from, how the train had rather miraculously been right about on time, and such. They could tell I was a bit disappointed. Then the second chap says to me,
"We can't take you on the tour, but we can do something for you. I personally think this is 100x better than any old tour!"
A turn for the better! We follow the young man upstairs and go through what I assume is the back door to the museum. He sits my wife and I in this theatre room where they were running a showing of interviews and highlights from our Champions League win in Istanbul. The lad tells the two of us to wait there and that he would be back in a couple minutes. I was trying to think what on earth he could do: was a player here? Rafa? Another coach? That didn't make any sense.
I soon became distracted by the video and began watching whoever was on the screen talking about how they were not going to underestimate Liverpool. I didn't even hear the lad come back into the room. My wife told me to turn and look, and I heard something being set down next to me on the bench. I turned and looked...
Sitting next to me was none other than the 2005 European Cup!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The same cup that all those great players had touched, kissed, and lifted into the air! The same cup that the Stevie is lifting in all those iconic pictures! THE FREAKING EUROPEAN CUP!!!!!!!
I... couldn't.... speak. When I finally found some words, I asked "Can I hold it?" The lad just smiled and told us to pull out the camera and get every picture we wanted.
I am currently in the process of transferring the pictures to my computer and getting them printed, but I guarantee that whenever our next weekend match is, I will be there was photos of the most memorable moment of my holiday. I also have several handouts from the Anfield staff for anyone who would like one. See you all next weekend!

Breaking News: Rodriguez medical in the books

LFCMPLS sources are reporting that Maxi Rodriguez will undergo a medical at Melwood either later today or first thing in the morning depending on his travel arrangements.

The player's agent Jose Segui is already on Merseyside but has so far been unable to link up with his client due to the bad weather conditions in the UK.
Rodriguez will cost Liverpool £1.5million.

£1.5million people! That is HUGE!!! I would of honestly paid £10.5million for him. This is exciting news.
